Gene Rodeenberry's brain child Star Trek has a cult following through out the world. It was first written in 1964 and has evolved into one of the most popular media franchises with six TV series, a number of books and novels, comics, star trek costumes, video games, board games, costumes, collectibles and eleven strak trek films. Millions of science fiction fans all across the world express then fan following and enthusiasm at several Star Trek conventions that take place around the world. The original series debuted on NBC in 1966 only 6 years after the first human moon landing and in the midst of the space age and the cold war. This helped attract a lot of fan base and contributed to the extraordinary success of the franchise.
The orginal Star Trek series is a tale of Captain Kirk and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise and the five year mission to explore the universe and "boldy go where no man has gone before". USS Enterprise could travel faster than light by employing the "warp drive" propulsion system. The warp drive system was capable of circumventing the time dilation problem, hence could travel greater than speed of light by many orders of magnitude. The central pursuit of the human civilization is depicted as exploration and knowledge instead of material gains. The invention of Warp-Drive attracts the advanced alien race called as Vulcans. Working together with the Vulcan, humans resolve the petty disputes and vices present in the human society and rise to greater cause that will benifit not just the humans but also other species from other planets. This gives birth to an interplanetary federal republic called as "United Federation of Planets" or "The Federation" consisting of more than 150 member planets spread across the milky way galaxy. The main adversaries of "The Federation" are the Klingon Empire, the Borg, The Dominion, The Cardassion Union and the Romulan Empire.
There are several weapons that are depicted through out the Star Trek series and movies. Laser ( a kind of side arm), pulse cannons, phase cannons, phase pistols, phaser, and disrupters are some of the enegry weapons used by star trek characters. On the bilogical weapons list the Tharlon Radiation, Trilithium Resin (deadly for humans) and Metreon cascade are the notable ones. Also brandished are different kinds of knives and katana swords. The most recent Star Trek film was released in summer of 2009 and the next one is planned for a possible 2011 summer release to celebrate the 45th anniversary.
