G.I. Joe is military themed action figure toy line targetted towards young boys. Its the boys equivalent of barbie dolls. The toy line has action figures representing the four different branches of the United Stated Amred Forces. The Action Soldier character represents the Army, the Action Sailor represnets the Navy, Action Marine represents the marine and the Action Pilot the Air Force. The toys are manufactured and marketted by Hasbro the toy company. The toy line is sold in the United Kingdom as Action Man.
The american toy line later evolved into the "Real American Hero" and consquently the Action Man was also renamed as Action Force. During the vietnam war the G.I. Joe war theme was downplayed and towards the end of the 1960 the toy line began to be called as the Adventure Team.
The main enemy of the Adventure are the evil aliens attacking from outer space call as the "The Intruders: Strong Men from Another World. Even though these cave man like aliens were smaller in size than the G.I. Joe action figures they were strong and had a golden armour. Recently Cobra squad, a powerful and ruthless terrorist organisation, has been depicted a arch enemy of the G.I.
The G.I. Joe franchise has well promoted and commercialized using G.I. Joe Comics produced by Marvel, G.I. Joe Cartoon, G.I. Joe: The Movie, and in summer of 2009 in the moview G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Several G.I. Joe video games also have been produced including Cobra Strike.
Some of the popular G.I. Joe characters are Snake-Eyes Storm Shadow, Duke, Stalker, Gung-Ho of the G.I Squad, where as Cobra Commander, Destro, and Baroness from the Cobra Squad.
